School Admissions

We are delighted that you may be interested in choosing St Michael’s Catholic School for your child.

Our school website gives you a wealth of information about our school and I hope you are able to explore it.

I would be delighted to welcome parents to school for a tour during the school day and to answer any questions. Please telephone or email school if you would like to come along.

Mrs Bruton
Headteacher

School Admissions Procedure

Full details of the admission arrangements can be found in the Primary and Secondary Admissions brochure produced by Durham County Council and further information can be found in the school’s Admissions Policy that can be found in the School Policies section of our website.

Visit the Durham County Council website for information regarding the school admission process and primary school admissions.

We are committed to meeting the needs of all children including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. We would ask parents to discuss the identified needs with the school prior to starting so that appropriate intervention and support can be planned and implemented. Advice from the LA or other agencies may be requested to ensure any the school can meet any needs appropriately.

In-Year Applications

An application can be made for a place for a child at any time outside the admission round and the child will be admitted where there are available places.  An application should be made to the school by completing the in-year admissions application form via this link: http://www.durham.gov.uk/schooladmissions and returning it to School Places and Admissions, Children and Young People’s Services, County Hall, Durham, County Durham, DH1 5UJ.

Where there are places available but more applications than places, the published oversubscription criteria, as set out in the admission arrangements for 2021/22, will be applied. Parents are advised to read the admission arrangements carefully before making their application.

If there are no places available, the child will be added to the waiting list.  Please see the admission arrangements for more details.

You will be advised of the outcome of your application in writing as soon as possible.  Applicants must be informed of the outcome of their application within 15 school days of receipt, but the aim is to notify applicants of the outcome of their application within 10 school days of receipt.

You have the right to appeal to an independent appeal panel if your application is unsuccessful.  To appeal against an admission decision visit: School admissions-appeals.

If you have any questions in relation to in-year admissions, please contact the school directly on 0191 373 1205 or by email at stmichaels@durhamlearning.net<strong>.

You can also discuss in-year applications with the local authority by contacting the Admissions Team at Durham County Council on 03000 265896 or by email at schooladmissions@durham.gov.uk.

Applying for a school place if your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan

Children and young people with an Education, Health and Care Plan (or Statement of Special Education Needs) follow a different admission and transfer process for a new school.  Please continue to complete Durham County Council’s parental preference form, as part of the admission process to a new school.  You continue to have a right to request a particular school and this will be considered alongside the information that we have about your child’s special educational needs.  The information would have been provided as part of the Education, Health and Care assessment or following the review meeting.

St Michael’s Catholic Primary School prides itself in being very inclusive and will endeavour to support every child

If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment and we would be delighted to meet you.
