The Sports Leaders at St Michael’s RC Primary School are made up of a small group of Y5 and Y6 and also a group of Y2 and Y3 children. Their main role is to help make our playground a more active playground by setting up and running different activities each lunchtime.
The Sports Leaders meet regularly with Mr Storey to come up with new ideas to enable children from all across school to take part in sports games or challenges at lunchtime, both competitive and non-competitive. The children also help Mr Storey maintain the condition of the sports equipment by making sure it is put away correctly at the end of each session.
The Sports Leaders have their own ideas on activities which can be played at lunchtimes, but have also been asking around school for ideas from other classes of games they would like to play at lunchtimes too. They also check with Mr Storey which topic each class is doing in PE to enable the children to have some extra time to practice their skills and improve.
As well as the Y5/Y6 Sports Leaders, at St Michael’s we also have a group of ‘Mini Sports Leaders’ which is a small group of Y2 and Y3 children who are passionate about PE and Sport in general. These children have been picked to work alongside the Sports Leaders to develop their confidence and their main job is to try and encourage the younger KS1 classes to be more active at lunchtimes. This is done through things such as helping them to use the skipping ropes and hula hoops correctly and giving them fun challenges to do, by setting up some simple games to work on skills such as throwing, catching, rolling, bouncing etc but also could just be a simple game of tag to encourage children to be active.
At St Michael’s RC Primary School, we want to make sure that our children are not just more active, but are having fun when playing outside and we believe that with the help of our fantastic Sports Leaders, we can achieve that.
